Automotive Fabric
With decades of experience and a deep understanding of automotive challenges, THS Textiles specialises in developing and supplying advanced textile solutions that cater to various aspects of vehicle manufacturing. From heat management to acoustics and interior comfort, our materials are designed to excel in the demanding world of automotive engineering.
Key features of our automotive textiles
Automotive covers a broad spectrum when it comes to building vehicles, and the fabrics that go into them can be varied but play important roles.
Heat shield
A thermal barrier is designed to reduce the probability of and offer protection against overheating. Typically, they are used around the engine and/or around the high energy and heat outputting turbos and superchargers, this offers the much-needed protection to the car bodywork and other lower temperature resisting internal components.
Fire sleeves or sleeving
These are uncoated silica sleeves or silicone-coated glass fibre sleeves. Their main purpose is to cover either wiring cables or fluid transfer cables and again the reason behind this is very similar to heat shielding, protecting the lower temperature components from heat exposure. But also, uncoated offers insulation and aids in keeping the heat inside the pipework covered and protection from abrasion, reducing wear and tear over time.

Smart Materials in the Automotive Industry
- Heat Management – Our innovative insulation materials and thermal solutions are crucial in managing heat generated by engines, exhaust systems, and various vehicle components, contributing to improved fuel efficiency and safety.
- Acoustic Solutions – Noise reduction is essential for vehicle comfort. THS Textiles offers sound insulation materials that help create quieter cabins, enhancing the driving experience.
- Interior Comfort – We provide textiles for automotive interiors, ensuring comfort, durability, and style. Our materials are designed to withstand the rigours of daily use while maintaining an attractive appearance.
- Safety – THS Textiles also contributes to automotive safety with materials that meet rigorous safety standards, providing protection in case of accidents and enhancing vehicle structural integrity.
FMVSS 302 Testing
FMVSS 302, or Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 302, sets requirements for the flammability and burning behaviour of interior materials in vehicles, such as passenger cars, trucks, and buses. It is one of the most widely used tests for automotive materials.
In response to customer demand, THS is expanding into the automotive sector, offering a comprehensive product testing program to meet these critical safety standards.

FAQs
What Role do Technical Textiles Play in Vehicle Safety?
Technical textiles contribute to fire resistance, heat shielding and component protection within vehicles. They help prevent overheating, protect critical systems and improve overall vehicle safety performance.
Are Automotive Fabrics Only Used in Engines and High-Heat Areas?
No, they are also widely used in interiors for acoustic control, comfort and durability. This includes seating, insulation and cabin noise reduction systems.
What is FMVSS 302 and Why Does it Matter?
FMVSS 302 is a flammability standard for vehicle interior materials. It ensures that fabrics used inside vehicles resist ignition and burn slowly, reducing fire risk in the event of an incident.
